WHY STATION MASTERS ARE on FAST?
‘HUNGER SATYAGRAHA’ the path shown by the Father of the Nation who obtained the great Indian Freedom by this powerful tool. Some of the well-known non-violent resistance advocates include Leo Tolstoy, Andrei Sakharov, Martin Luther King, Jr. Václav Havel, Lech Wa³êsa, our great leader Com. P. Sivan Pillai and of course, posterity shall remember you and me for this act of Satyagraha.
When Honourable Minister and the top brass of Hub of Indian Transporters i.e. the Railway Board design the future prospects from the top of hierarchy, WE STATION MASTERS / STATION MANAGERS fraternity, execute their plans as well their desire to bring out the humane face of the Railways, earnestly from the floor level for writing the success story for our Indian Railways.
Why this agitation? Is it for greedy pay hike; 5 star luxury or for undue advantage? - NEY !
The universal principal defines “Supervisor to be placed above the Supervised”. But in Indian Railways, they flout this principle for their convenience. The Supervisors without proper authority, proper pay structure, expected to be an effective Supervisor and the poor SM shoulder only “RESPONSIBILITY”. Is it possible in reality? But still we toil to get the better results, and hoist the Railways fame high in the comity of Global Railways.
The decorations and the decoration - “Station Master is a popular icon”, “Super Human”, “SM is not a mere job; it is rather a `Dharma”, “their shoulders like Atlas carrying earth”, “SM is the most visible and representative face of the Railways”, “An in-charge SM being an identified leader of his team”, “The SM/ASM are the most stressed category due to excess work load”, “there is reluctance to take up SMs job”, “slight mistake may lead the poor SM/ASM to jail” – these are not the statements of any Station Master or Trade unions in Indian Railways, rather all these are the confessions of Railway Officers and Commissions. In fact many of our colleagues are in Jail or under trial.
How long we have been hearing these agonizing decorations heaped on the Station Masters of Indian Railways. YES! This agitation; it is not for greedy pay hike; 5 star luxury or for undue advantage.
The Railway Ministry opines that “Increase in salary, more Allowances, the more facilities at work places and for family”. It has taken them 40 years to convince the Railway Board that the STATION MASTERS are the Brand Ambassadors of Indian Railway and they deserve better pay and Allowance not withstanding amenities to them and their families. They further opined and denied that “better pay scales and allowances may be looked into in the NEXT PAY COMMISSION”. At this juncture should the Station Masters community wait for another one decade for the next Pay Commission to avail their legitimate remuneration? What a tragedy, what a paradox? No employee with self respect and self esteem CAN STAND THIS INSULT AND INJUSTICE.
Are not this Brand Ambassador rather ICONs need better uniform to hold their head high in proud? Don’t they need higher or atleast equated pay structure than their subordinates whom they supervise? Don’t they need another SM to share their role conflict, i.e. ‘Additional SMs’? Don’t they need congenial working environment? Though not like IT employees, at least with bare necessities?
WE knock, with the hope, we will be answered, We ask, with the hope, we will be given. This is the universal fact. We should not forget, just to exercise this universal fact. We, SMs are in the streets for this one day token fast from dawn to dusk-ie , 1st Dec 09, in all the four directions of the sub-continent ie North – New Delhi, East- Hajipur, West- Bombay and South- Secunderabad, before the respective GMs Office – FASTING !
