SOME TIPS ON BLOOD DONATION

• Person above 18 years of age and over 45 KGs in weight can donate blood once in three months.

• A normal adult has 5 to 6 litres of blood in his/her body of which only 300 ml is used during blood donation.

• This blood is replaced by your body within 24 to 48 hours!

• No special diet, rest or medicine is required after blood donation!

• Donor should not have taken any medicine in the last 48 hours!

• Donor should not have contacted jaundice in the last three years!

• Every Donor is given a medical checkup prior to donation to see if he/she is medically fit and doesn't suffer from anaemia, high blood pressure etc.

The Donor, if a Railway employee,

1. Is eligible for one day Special Casual Leave (SCL) & Complimentary Pass!

2. No prior permission of the Government is required for donating blood in Blood Banks attached to Railway Hospitals or Government Hospitals or if called upon in emergencies to donate blood in any Blood Bank!

3. No prior permission is necessary for acceptance of an amount on account of blood donation, since it is considered that receipts from the sale of blood does not attract the provisions of Rule R11 2035 (1334) and 2216

(Authority: RB's Letter No. 84/H/6-1/17 dated 04-06-1985 and No. 90/H/68/3 dated 15-03-1991)

4. Who donates blood to a Railway Hospital on a working day, he/she may be granted SCL for that day!

5. Who comes from outstation to donate blood to a railway hospital, he/she may be granted a Complimentary Pass of the same class as admissible to him/her under the normal rules to cover the journey. He/she may be allowed a minimum journey time apart from one day SCL!

As blood is a therapeutic substance used in treatment of patients, expenditure incurred far obtaining blood shall be debited to ordinary railway revenues and allocated under the head "Medicines".

As far as possible railway employees should be encouraged to donate blood voluntarily and not with any mercenary motive!

  (Ref: RB's Letter No. 65/H/7/248 dated 05-02-1966 & Chapter - 6 of IREC Volume - I)
