 JET AIRWAYS PILOTS STRIKE – Hats off- UNITY IS STRENGTH


CAUSE: Pilots of Jet Airways have a right to form a trade union. 

ACTION: Pilot's action in forming a union, management sacking 2 pilots and going on strike will no-doubt affect passengers to some extent. Result of forming an union, and going on strike - may make or break worker's right. However a win on part of owners and management of Jet Airways, will definitely make life difficult for workers.

THREAT: Warned that it had been in conciliatory talks with the union and  the RLC has warned that any  strike during the period  would be deemed illegal s per the Industrial Disputed Act. Jet CEO said, ”the Bombay High Court has passed an order restraining any kind of strike”.

RESULTS: 5 days concluded following a settlement between  the pilots and the Managements. All the five sacked pilots back in service.

 
CHRONOLOGY 

08th Sept 09 - 361 Jet pilots (163 captains and 198 first officers) go on sick leave; flights hit. They were protesting the ouster of two colleagues. Jet-Airlines chief is no different in addressing his airlines pilot's action to a "terrorist action”. Three more pilots of the carrier were sacked to the list. This led to the pilots hardening their stand. Meanwhile, Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal threatened to shut down the airline if pilots continued with the strike. The Government on Tuesday expressed its concern at the inconvenience being caused to passengers by the cancellation of Jet Airways flights, as a large chunk of pilots failed to report for work in protest against the sacking of two of their colleagues.
 

 

09th Sept 09 - Deadlock persists, 200 Jet flight cancelled.Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal Wednesday warned of stern action against his pilots. "They are behaving like terrorists. They cannot hold the country, passengers and the airline hostage," and continue to report sick "in violation of a Bombay High Court order". 

10th Sept 09 -  As the impasse over the Jet Airways pilots stir continued for the third day today, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inquired about the crisis at the Cabinet meeting and hopes for a solution were pinned on  conciliation talks convened by the Chief Labour Commissioner. Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam urged that the termination  move was in gross violation of the principles of natural justice.

11th Sept 09 - Marathon talks to end the impasse between the management and its pilots before CLC remained inconclusive. Labour Minister Malikarjun Kharge said that he was confident of a solution.

12th Sept 09 - End in sight to Jet pilots’ stir.  9 hours long inconclusive conciliation proceedings.  Management and the agitators were understood to have worked out a settlement.

13th Sept 09 - Five day agitation was called off. Consultative body to address issues of Management, pilots. The pilots, including the five who were sacked, will resume duties. An amicable agreement reached.

LESSION:      UNITY IS STRENGTH.
