In the wake of the 57 rail accidents witnessed this year, including the recent one near Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu, the government on Friday set up a Five Member high-level Safety Review Committee to conduct a safety audit and plug loopholes in the system and submit its report within three months.
The Committee:

2) E. Sreedharan, Delhi Metro MD as its Adviser
3) N. Vedachalam of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram,
4) Sanjay Dhande, Director, IIT, Kanpur and
5) G.P. Srivastava, Director E & I Group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
The Agenda:
1. The signaling systems,
2. Rolling stock, fixed structures (tracks, bridges and overhead equipment),
3. Human resource development, with emphasis on training, education and research,
4. The need for a third party audit, and
5. Organisational and structural changes in the rail research establishments.
Mr. Trivedi, the Railway Minister claimed that the Railways' safety record had improved considerably — with the number of train accidents having come down to 141 in 2010-11 from the 2,000 accidents witnessed in 1960-61. Between April 1-September 15, 57 accidents had been reported compared to 65 accidents in the same period last year.
"Safety is an ongoing process. Our first priority is safety and there will be no compromise on it. We are working towards zero tolerance as far as safety is concerned," further Trivedi said.
