CHENNAI: An Assistant Station Master of the CHENNAI Junction cabin was suspended on Monday for not responding properly to Divisional Authorities' queries on the movement of trains.

According to Southern Railway sources, some incoming trains to Chennai Central were detained at the junction for more than 15 minutes on Monday afternoon. Following a telephonic complaint from a passenger, the Divisional Operations Manager contacted the MAS & Basin Bridge Cabin crew. One of the ASMs, M. Soundarrajan, SM/MAS did not respond properly to the queries of the DOM.

The DOM told The Hindu that it was normal to detain trains at the Basin Bridge Junction due to non-availability of platform at Chennai Central to receive them. It was the duty of the cabin SM to inform superior officers about the detention when asked. In the present case, when the DOM was enquiring with the Cabin SM over phone, the ASM intervened and replied "haughtily." As he behaved in an "irresponsible" manner the ASM was suspended.

According to the All India Station Masters' Association, the Association' s All-India Secretary General John Vincent was the cabin in-charge responsible for movement of trains into and out of Chennai Central. Mr. Vincent had spoken to the DOM and said that since he was in charge, the responsibility should be fixed on him and not on the ASM.

There was no delay of the train and it reached Chennai Central five minutes before the scheduled time of 3 p.m., the AISMA said. It claimed that action was taken against the ASM based on the complaint of a top railway official's relative, who was travelling in the train.

Dear Web in-charge, as per your news, there is no Platform crunch. Platform is available . Since there is no information that the spouse of Additional charge General Manager is in the train. The administration has failed to inform the Cabin SM incharge, ie me. Moreover GMs wife is not in the protocol list. Hence the Suspension of my Asst SM is arbitrary and unwarranted. However he was put back - SG.
