Todays News: UK Rail transport workers take strike action over pay and conditions
Transport workers based at a UK rail infrastructure company have taken industrial action over pay and conditions.
The 800 workers based at Amey Consulting and Amey Inter-urban rail operations across the UK walked out on strike at 14:00 hours on 15 July in response to the company’s refusal to negotiate on pay and conditions for all staff equally. They are also angry over a “pitiful” one per cent pay offer, when it has been reported that Amey directors have received bonuses of up to 20 per cent and that the company made £100 million in profit last year, a record high. The company is owned by Spanish transport infrastructure giant Ferrovial
The ITF-affiliated Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA), which represents the workers, states that Amey has said that it is not prepared to accept the principle of widening out collective bargaining even if TSSA is able to demonstrate support for this. This runs counter to Ferrovial’s own stated commitment to union rights.
In a further development, TSSA reps at the Transport for London-owned, but Amey-run, infraco Tube Lines claim they have been subjected to management bullying due to the union's campaign for collective bargaining rights. This follows on from Amey's refusal to negotiate pay and conditions with TSSA in their inter-urban and consulting businesses. TSSA has called upon all trade unionists around the world to act to defend workers' rights.
Gerry Doherty, TSSA general secretary, said: "Amey clearly has a corporate policy to smash trade union organisation wherever they operate. Londoners are paying millions of pounds of taxes to Amey in order that they can attack the rights of Tube Lines staff. Amey's parent company, Spanish-owned Ferrovial, say they respect the right to be part of trade union, while in Britain they do the opposite. TSSA will not tolerate such abuses. We call upon all those people who stand for fairness and human dignity to protest at Amey's disgraceful actions."
