Fill railway Station Master vacancies

The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU) on 11/12/2008 urged the Railway Authorities to recruit personnel according to the old recruitment procedure as the amendments proposed by No. 6/2006 Circular have not been implemented yet.

SLRSMU President K.V. Jayasena told the Daily News yesterday that the authorities should take immediate action to fill the 200 vacancies of Station Masters either following the old recruitment procedure or the new recruitment procedure by amending the Circular No. 6/2006. “This problem has dragged on for three years,” he said.

Meanwhile the Union expects to go for trade union action with effect from December 29, if the Authorities do not provide a speedy solution to the problem,” the union president said.

He said his Union has no intention of puting the Government in trouble at this juncture. The privileges of Station Masters should be protected as they play a vital role in the railways service.

A number of anomalies related to their promotions and salary increments have not been rectified by the authorities yet. Several Station Masters in Grade Two have also been attached to Grade Three without granting salary increments, Jayaseana said.

The Government has already provided with sufficient resources and a huge amount of fund allocations for the Railway, but the authorities have failed in providing the best railway service to the commuters. A number of shortcomings including signal faults, weak track maintenance, derailments, train collisions mechanical faults, train delays and cancellations that prevailed in the service have not been identified and solved yet, he said. He said today the railway service is collapsing due to wrong decisions and the management’s weaknesses. Railway as a public transport, should be protected and facilitated as it provides service to the ordinary masses.
